What is DEF?

Diesel Exhaust Fluid

The Diesel Exhaust Fluid market came about in response to the reduction of NOx emission requirements determined by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) in 2010. The changes set forth by the Clean Air Act had a ripple effect on manufacturers who had to discover a technology that would transform harmful NOx emissions by at least 90 percent. Engine manufacturers chose a technology called SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) that utilizes DEF as a dosing agent to turn harmful emissions into expellable water vapor and improve fuel economy by up to 5%.

  • DEF is a 32.5 % urea based solution mixed with 67.5 percent de-ionized water
  • Nontoxic and nonpolluting with a slight ammonia based odor
  • DEF is not flammable due to its aqueous nature
